Our Story

Narriman Sakier Joseph produced a tasty par baked rooti in the early 1990s after being inspired by her father. The idea was to produce a household product that was convenient, tasty and fulfilling.
After trading in the informal sector for almost two decades with Salomies at a vibrant market place in Mitchells Plain, Narriman and her sister started Ghalwah Convenience Foods in 2007.
Currently, the business leases a premises which is well-secured with 24 hour surveillance and also conforms with GMP health standards at the Philippi Fresh Produce Market.
Narriman’s four children has subsequently inherited the business and has a staff contingency of around 50 employees, as her intention was to create jobs for the community.
Ghalwah products can be found in over 200 outlets around town in selected Spar’s, Visfabriek’s, Supermarkets and Butcheries.

Probably the best rootis we have ever had. Dave Senekal10/08/2020 Great tasting roti. Don't buy anything else if my supplier is out of stock. Also great value for money. Allastair Mitchell16/07/2020 The best pre-cooked rootis! Our standard go to for rootis and we make sure always to have a pack on hand in the freezer . I met one of the owners Ashraf, through a Life Coaching course, when he shared the story of their business which was founded by their struggling mum who started making rootis from her home in Mitchell's Plain,in a bid to support her family. The kids have kept her legacy alive by setting up and working in this business, named after their mum. Ashraf generously gifted each of his class mates a packet of Ghalwah Rootis, and that's when I became hooked and have been buying these rootis ever since. The rootis are deliciously flakey and buttery. They are also generous, just like the owners. Also it's always good to support homegrown local businesses with a good story. Me 2014r04/07/2020
